UNDER ARMOUR-PROFIT $13.09

I found this men’s Under Armour camo and black sweatshirt at Goodwill for $4.23 including tax. I knew as soon as I saw this sweatshirt it was going to sell and for a good price. People love Under Armour and they love camo, put them together and it is a match made in heaven. I listed this sweatshirt in an auction for 7 days starting at $14.99 plus $6.99 shipping, I had 48 views, 5 bids, and it sold for $24.49 including shipping.

TIP:  I was super lucky with this sweatshirt because the weight of it was exactly 16 ounces, so I was still able to ship it USPS First Class. You have to purchase your label on ebay to get up to 16 ounces.  If you buy your postage at the Post Office you can only ship up to 13 ounces. Purchasing your labels on ebay will save you about 20% plus the tracking number is uploaded automatically. When I first started I would buy my postage at the Post Office and then manually input the tracking number, I wasted so much time and money.

I paid $11.40 to buy, sell, and ship this sweatshirt, my item sold for $24.49, so I made $13.09.

I was getting ready to re-new the kids parenting fun passes. The pass cost $12.95 for the year and gives the kids a lot of buy one get one free admissions around our area, so the profit from this item will buy one of our passes.

2 AMAZON KINDLES-PROFIT $8.05

I purchased 2 D01100 Amazon Kindles in pre-owned condition at www.shopgoodwill.com.  I won the auction for $21.49 including shipping, so each Kindle cost me $10.74.  Both Kindles were untested when I bought them, but ended up being in good condition and restored to factory settings.  I listed them in 2 different auctions for 7 days both starting at $14.99 plus $5.99 shipping.  Both Kindles had about 30 views, 1 bid, and each sold for $21.49, for a total of $41.96.

TIP:  When you buy electronics on www.shopgoodwill.com, read the description carefully.  Sometimes they test the electronics and sometimes they do not.  From my experience the best lots are the untested ones, other bidders are scared that the items are untested and may be broken so the price stays low.  Just about every lot I have purchased that was untested has been in good working condition, with the exception of a tablet here or there.  Even if you end up with a broken item it is still worth something so don’t be afraid to sell it, just make sure you list it as broken and describe it correctly.

The total cost to buy and sell my 2 Kindles was $33.91, my Kindles sold for $41.96, so I made $8.05.

TIP:  If you buy lots that include more items you will end up with a lower price per piece.  After I completed this lot I started looking for lots that included 5 or more tablets.  I try to keep the price at around $5 per Kindle/tablet so I make at least $10 off of each piece.  What is cool about the Kindle/tablet lots on www.shopgoodwill.com is you do not always know what the model numbers are so some of them can be newer and worth more money.  I just purchased a lot of 10 kindles the other day, some are older, others are newer, some models are unknown, and they are all untested, but the entire lot was only $51.89.  It will be exciting to find out what I bought, but at $5 a tablet I can’t go wrong.

This was a good first introduction to e-readers, I made $8.05 and that is enough for a fun lunch at CC’s pizza, the kids can run around and act crazy and nobody yells at us!

NIKE GOLF SHORTS-PROFIT $8.38

I found these Nike golf shorts in perfect condition at my local Goodwill for $4.23 including tax.  I love finding men’s Nike golf shorts because they always sell fast and for a good price.  This pair was so cool because they were a little different, most of the pairs I have had until now were bland colors, but this pair was neon green, black and gray.  I listed them in an auction for 7 days starting at $9.99 plus $5.99 shipping, I had 31 views, 2 bids and they sold for $18.49 including shipping.

TIP:  Adidas golf shorts also sell, but they take twice as long and sell for 25% less then Nike based on my experiences.  When I see Adidas golf shorts I always think twice because I will only make a few dollars on them and they take up storage.  I usually buy them, but they are not my favorite.

BEWARE: EBAY BUYER SCAM

2 weeks ago I received an email from Paypal saying that a buyer was disputing their charge claiming that they did not authorize the payment for an item they bought from me on ebay.  When I received the email I immediately pulled up the order checked the tracking and saw that the package was delivered.  Paypal also said in their email that they had the tracking details and that they did not need any more info from me at that time.  I sent an email to Paypal anyway letting them know the order and tracking details showing them that the package was sent and delivered.  They thanked me for the information and told me they would be in touch with an update soon.

One thing that was a little weird with this order was after the lady paid for the item she emailed me and said she had just moved and she would appreciate it if I could send her package to her new address.  I had already wrapped her package up and paid for the postage, but I told her no problem.  I voided the original shipping label, re-printed a new shipping label and sent her package.

Paypal just got back to me the other day and said they are siding in with the buyer, returning the money to them, and charging me an additional $20 charge back fee, WHAT!!!!!  So I called Paypal immediately, I went over all of the details with the lady, as she was reviewing the details she asked why were there 2 shipping labels.  I told her that I buyer requested that I send the package to her new address and I did.  She said that is why I lost the case because I changed the address for the buyer, when the address is changed after the sale you are no longer protected by ebay or Paypal.  I was soooooo confused, she said that fraudulent buyers do this all of the time.  She went on to explain that the buyer will purchase something, ask the seller to change the address for a reason that makes sense which then exposes the seller to no protection, then the item gets charged back, and you lose.  I still do not know if this person used a random person’s Paypal account or if they used their friend’s account.  Either way I was charged back, lost the item that I sent, lost the original shipping fee, and was charged an additional $20 charge back fee, absolutely crazy.

What can you do?  The Paypal lady said, report it to ebay and block that buyer, DONE.  She also told me to never change the address for a buyer even if it sounds perfectly normal.  As soon as you change the address after the sale you are no longer protected by ebay or Paypal.  The Paypal lady said that these people know what they are doing and they are aware that they breaking the line of protection when they ask for an address change.

Don’t leave yourself unprotected, if the buyer requests an address change after the sale, you have to cancel the order and let the customer know that they need to re-place the order with their new address and then you will remain protected.  The Paypal lady made a good point that the buyer has the opportunity to change their address right before they place their order, so there should be no need to change it after.  However I told her that months ago I had a guy who bought a pair of sunglasses from me and after the sale he wrote me and said he was going on vacation and he would like for me to send the glasses to his brother’s house, and I did it for him, completely unaware that I was unprotecting myself and it was fine.  So it never even occurred to me that someone would do this and get away with it.  I hope this post can prevent someone else from being a victim of this crime.

UNDER ARMOUR-PROFIT $10.31

I found this men’s Under Armour light jacket in perfect condition at our local Goodwill for $7.41 including tax. I not only knew this jacket would sell for a good price but it was also light so I would still be able to ship it USPS First Class.

TIP: I do not buy most jackets because they weigh over 16 ounces. A package over 16 ounces is shipped USPS Parcel Select, FedEx Smartpost, Priority which is more expensive.

At my Goodwill a jacket cost $6.99 so if you add a higher shipping fee, ebay and paypal fees, the jacket would have to sell for at least $30 and most of them are not worth it. Light jackets/windbreakers are the exception, they weigh less than a pound therefore you can ship them USPS First Class, but you still have to make sure the light jacket/windbreaker is a great brand so it brings a higher price because they do cost more than regular clothing.

I listed this jacket in a 7 day auction starting at $9.99 plus $7.99 shipping, I had 37 views, 4 bids, and the jacket sold for a total of $24.49 including shipping.

TAHARI PANTS-PROFIT $10.06

I found these new Tahari linen pants at Goodwill for $4.23 including tax. I love the Tahari brand, I just hate the Tahari retail price tag, in this case these pants had a retail tag of $229. I know there are a lot of people who feel the same so I knew they would sell quickly on ebay. These pants were extremely wrinkled, which I highlighted in my listing, I wish I would have had a steamer because I know I would have received higher bids if they were de-wrinkled. I listed these pants as-is in a 7 day auction starting at $9.99 plus $5.99 shipping. I had 18 page views, 3 bids, and they sold for $20.49 including shipping.

TIP: I would suggest auctioning your pre-owned clothing to keep your inventory moving, however there are pieces you should consider listing at a higher fixed buy it now price. Even though you are going to store the item longer it should be worth the extra profit. I think these new Tahari pants should have been one of those items. They had a $229 price tag on them, I think I could have listed them for a buy it now price of $69 and waited for the right buyer. If they didn’t sell for that price I could have lowered the price or moved them into an auction at any time.

So when we go we spend around $10, 3 tickets and $7 for our popcorn, the profit from this item will fund one of our Wednesday morning summer movie excursions.

NEW HAVAIANAS-PROFIT $4.26

One day walking through Ross, an off priced retailer I saw a rack of Havaianas flip flops for $4.99 per pair, I love Havaianas.  Since I buy this style of flip flop all the time I knew they sold between $18-28 retail, but I did not know how much someone would pay for them on ebay.  So I bought them for $5.29 including tax.  I listed them for the buy it now price of $9.99 plus $4.99 shipping for 30 days.  After two weeks on ebay someone bought them for a total of $14.98 including shipping.

TIP:  I recently had a package returned to me from the post office, this was the first time this ever happened to me, apparently my package was off by 1 ounce.  I could not believe the post office accepted the package if their intention was to return it back to me.  I was not happy, I had to re-pay for shipping and the package was obviously delayed to the customer.  So my advice is if you weigh your own package and purchase your label off of ebay make sure when you drop it off the post office scale weight matches yours.  I also noticed that usually I can increase the weight of my package by an ounce or 2 and the price stays the same.  For example it does not matter if your package weighs 6, 7, or 8 ounces each weight costs $2.77 to ship USPS first class, so if I have a package that weighs 6 ounces I will input 8 ounces, it costs the same and I am ensured that the weight is good even if one post office scale is different from another post office scale.

4 BROKEN iPHONES-PROFIT $52.78

I purchased 4 iphones from www.shopgoodwill.com, the following was included in the lot:

1 iphone 6

2 iphone 5

1 iphone 4

I won the auction for $41.25 including shipping.  All I knew was that the phones were untested, so I was really hoping that the iphone 6 would power on, but I knew based on research that even if it did not power on it would still be worth money.

TIP:  The iphone 5 and 6s are worth money even if there is no power, cracked screen, and/or icloud and network locked.  The iphone 3 and 4s are worth $10-$20 per phone broken.

I listed the phones separately each in a 7 day auction.

The iphone 6, did not power on, I did try a new battery but it still did not turn on– The starting price was $39.99 plus $4.99 shipping, it had 106 views, 4 bids, and sold for $48.98.

The iphone 5c, powered on, but was icloud locked – The starting price was $29.99 including shipping, it had 90 views, 2 bids, and sold for $31.

The iphone 5 A1428, did not power on, I also tried a new battery with this one and there was still no power – The starting price was $14.99 plus $4.99, it had 42 views, 3 bids, and sold for $21.49.

The iphone 4, was restored, but had a cracked screen – the starting price was $19.99 with free shipping, it had 40 views, 1 bid, and sold for $19.99.

$41.25 total cost for all 4 phones

$10.40 USPS first class shipping, it cost at the time $2.60 to ship each phone

THE NORTH FACE-PROFIT $6.13

I found this women’s north face pull over fleece for $4.23 including tax at my local Goodwill.  I listed it in a 7 day auction starting at $9.99 plus $4.99 shipping.  I had 30 views, 3 people placed bids and the fleece sold for $15.98 including shipping.

TIP:  I feel like women’s clothing does not sell as well as men’s or kid’s clothing on ebay.  I have sold some women’s pieces, but it usually takes twice as long to find a buyer and the items do not sell for as much as similar men’s or kid’s items.  The North Face brand is an exception it sells consistently and for a fair price.  Other women’s brands I have done well with are Under Armour and Victoria’s Secret.  I re-sell men’s and kid’s Nike clothing and do well, but for some reason women’s Nike clothing does not sell at all or if it does it sells for hardly anything.  Mall brands like Express, Abercrombie, Limited, and Old Navy just to name a few do not sell for very much on a secondary market, unless they are new.

TIP:  I have had a couple of issues with women’s clothes that you should be aware of.  The first is knowing if the item is women’s or junior’s.  I had a really cool Guess jacket size large, I did not even think about the difference between women’s and juniors, I listed it under women’s, sure enough the person who bought it wrote me letting me know that the jacket was actually a junior’s large.  I told her she could of course return it, but she ended up keeping it for her niece.  The other issue is if an item is pre-owned and there is even a little fabric fading clearly state that the fabric is faded.  I had another North Face jacket it was black, in the listing I stated it was in good condition with some fabric wear, which I felt was an accurate description.  With fabric wear comes slight fading and I felt the pictures were very very close to the right color.  Anyway I guess she was expecting the jacket to be jet black and it wasn’t so she wanted to return it, I didn’t even try to argue, technically she was right because I did not say the jacket had minor fading, I said fabric wear.  I offered her a partial refund that equaled what I would have paid in shipping and re-selling fees and she accepted.  So long story short, if I would have added the fabric shows minor fading she would not have requested the return because she would have expected some fading.  So be very specific in your description and don’t assume the person reading the listing is going to understand what you are trying to say.  I assumed fabric wear would include minor fading and it did not and it cost me money, I still made money on the item, but just not as much.
