RLX POLO GOLF SHIRT-PROFIT $7.43

I found this super cool Ralph Lauren RLX golf shirt at Goodwill for $4.23 including tax.  I decided to list this shirt in an auction for 7 days, I started it on a Tuesday and it ended the following Tuesday at 11pm.  My starting price was $9.99 plus $3.99 shipping, I had 50 page views that week for this item, 4 people bid on it, and it sold for a total of $16.49 including shipping.

TIP:  I did not know at the time when I bought this shirt how much people liked the RLX brand.  If you find anything RLX for the right price buy it, the brand sells great on ebay.

Total cost of my item including all selling fees was $9.06, my item sold for $16.49 including shipping, my profit was $7.43.  This was the second item I purchased from Goodwill and I came close to doubling my money, so much fun.  $7.43 is one third of the way to getting a pedicure, one or two more sold items and I could take an hour for myself, yeah!

NEW RL PILLOWCASES-PROFIT $2.60 :(

I found these Ralph Lauren pillow cases at Homegoods, an off priced retailer, for $13.77 including tax.  These pillow cases were not on clearance they are regularly priced at $12.99.  I searched ebay in the sold listings area and it appeared pillow cases like these were selling for around $26.00.  So I listed my pillow cases for $24.99 including free shipping for 30 days.  After a week I had around 10 page views and 1 watcher, so I let them go another week, I gained 10 more views and another watcher.  Going into the third week I lowered them to $22.99 with free shipping, that was my bottom price I would sell them for, I still had the option to break down the price if I wanted to.  2 weeks later they sold for my buy it now price and had a total of 36 page views.

My total cost including all fees $20.39, they sold for $22.99, so I made $2.60.  Not my best buy, but it was a learning moment, I paid too much.

TIP:  If you buy pillow cases, buy them in the clearance section for $10 or less.  Brands I would buy would be Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein both sell on ebay in time, however for me the profit is not enough for what is invested so I do not plan on purchasing anymore pillowcases/linens.

At least I made a couple of dollars and did not lose money on them.  I made a mistake that day, I not only bought these pillow cases but I also bought 2 other sets for the same price.  I should have tried 1 set and waited to see what the outcome was before I bought more.  The other 2 sets did sell, but they had a similar outcome.  It took about a month to sell and they only made a couple of dollars each.  So the moral of the story is when you buy an item, wait for it to sell, then decide if you want to sell another one like it.  Anyway my boys love ring pops, they are great because my kids will suck on them for a half an hour, which is enough time for me to shop for a few items to sell on ebay in peace.  I can buy a bag of ring pops for $1 at the Dollar Tree so $2.60 profit will get me 2 bags of ring pops, you cannot put a value on two quiet children while shopping, priceless.

NEW NIKE GOLF SHORTS-PROFIT $10.52

I found these new Nike golf shorts for $13.77 including tax in the clearance section at Ross, an off priced retailer.  I just sold a pre-owned pair of Nike golf shorts so I figured a new pair would be a good choice.  I decided to offer these shorts at a buy it now price of $26.99 plus $4.99 shipping for 30 days.  They had 15 views and sold in 5 days for the buy it now price.

TIP:  What is better an auction style listing or buy it now listing?  I choose to auction an item when I have very little money in it, I am not sure what the value is, and/or I want the item to sell in 7-10 days.  I offer an item at a buy it now price when I have a new item that has a small range in the sale price.  If you have a new item and there is a large range in the sale price, then it is up to you.  Great example, these shorts are selling anywhere from $30-$50 on ebay.  I chose a very competitive buy it now price so they would sell quickly.  My other choice would have been to offer my item as an auction, start the price at $19.99 and see if people would bid them up.  Typically my new items are buy it now and I will auction my pre-owned items that I know are popular and will get a lot of traffic.  These shorts could have been an exception.  They are very popular and there is a huge price range that they sell for.  In the future I would definitely try to offer a pair like these as an auction just to see what they sell for.  Regardless they sold for a good price in a quick amount of time and that is the goal.

The total cost of my item including all fees was $21.46, my item sold for $31.98 so I made $10.52.  My profit from this item paid for my Birchbox subscription that month.  If you do not get Birchbox yet you have to try it.  It is so much fun, I have been married for over 10 years and there are not a whole lot of surprises in my life, so to receive a box each month that has 5 surprise samples chosen just for me is so exciting.  Plus you get to take a little time for yourself here and there trying out your new products each month.  It is the best $10 you will ever spend on yourself.

USED NIKE GOLF SHORTS-PROFIT $4.20

I read that some people find inventory at Goodwill and Thrift stores.  So I decided to visit our local Goodwill store and check it out.  Clothing can be very tricky because most of it is worthless especially in pre-owned condition, you have to know what brands have a good resale value. What is crazy is the brands you would think have value do not have any value.

TIP: I have always thought of Abercrombie, American Eagle, Express, and other mall brands as higher priced items and they hold value with me, but they do not resale well at all.

Goodwill is fun because almost everything in the store is $3.99.  So noticing the price point, I was walking through the store thinking what could I buy that someone would pay a minimum of $12 for, remember the markup goal is 3 times the purchase price.  I started looking through men’s shorts and found these Nike Dri Fit golf shorts.  I knew Nike golf shorts cost $60-$80 new, I thought someone would at least pay $12 for them if not more, so I bought them for $4.23 including tax.  I love Nike golf clothing, because even after a million washes their clothes still look good.

TIP: Visit a Goodwill or thrift shop in the nicest part of town.  The more money in an area the nicer the items will be.  I find unbelievable brands at our Goodwill and a lot of the items I find still have tags on them.

TIP:  If you purchase pre-owned clothing look it over very closely, make sure there are no tears and/or stains and make sure all the buttons are intact.  I think people on ebay buying pre-owned clothing want near perfect condition.  Also, you may not like this one, but smell the item, make sure there is no funky smell.  Since the item has been in a neutral store setting it should smell fine, but you never know.  A cigarette smell can be strong, so you don’t want to buy a smokers shirt and have someone buy it from you and return it because it smells like an ash tray.

TIP:  I check the no returns box on all of my items.  I list all of my items very accurately and I have confidence in what I am selling.  I have a sales background and I was always taught never present rescission.  If anyone ever had a real problem with something they bought from me of course I would make it right and fix their problem, but I don’t advertise returns.  Maybe I would sell more if I stressed that I accept returns, maybe I would sell the same and have more returns, I don’t know, but the way I have been doing it seems to work well for me.  I do know that if you reach a top rated status and you want a discount in ebay fees you do have to accept returns.  I don’t know if the discount in ebay fees would out-weigh the headaches from handling returns, I have not walked that path.  Maybe someone who has can provide their feeling on the topic.  Ultimately it is your choice, do what is best for you.

I listed the shorts as an auction because I had no idea what someone would pay for them, but I knew I wanted at least $12 out of them.  I started the auction at $9.99 plus 3.99 in shipping.  My auction started on a Tuesday at 11:30am pacific time which was 2:30pm my time.  I was not yet aware of the value of starting my listings on the right day at the right time.  Anyway the listing ended the following Tuesday at 2:30pm, while everyone was at work, I had one bid at my minimum price of $9.99 plus $3.99 shipping, for the total price of $13.98; I had 16 page views that week for this item.

The total cost of my item including all fees was $9.78, my item sold for $13.98 so I made $4.20.  That is almost 100% return on my money, not bad for my first try selling a thrift shop item.  I really like this concept because by purchasing from Goodwill/Thrift shops you are supporting good causes in your community.  My profit of $4.20 is 2 toys at the Dollar Tree and 1 small frosty at Wendy’s, which I split between both of them.  If you haven’t taken your kids to The Dollar Tree yet you are in for a treat.  When you walk in the store tell your kids they can pick out any toy they want in the whole store, you will watch their eyes light up, but make sure you have time because it is an hour ordeal.  My kids will choose The Dollar Tree and frostys over Chuck E. Cheese’s, crazy, but it works.

DESIGNER SUNGLASSES-PROFIT $6.51

I purchased these Oscar De La Renta sunglasses from Marshalls, an off priced retailer for $10.59 including taxes.  Other ebay sellers were selling glasses similar to these anywhere from $20-$30.  I listed them for the buy it now price of $22.99 including free shipping for 30 days.  They were on ebay for 7 days, they had 21 page views, and sold for $22.99.

KIDS NIKE SOCKS-PROFIT $5.03

I decided to test out kid’s socks to see if I would get the same successful result.  I chose to purchase 6 pairs of boy’s Nike performance socks size 6/7 (13c-3y) from Marshall’s, an off priced retailer for $5.29 including tax.  They were crazy fun colors, so I had no idea if they were going to sell, plus they were not Dri Fit, I did not know if that made a difference with kid’s socks.  Other sellers on ebay were selling them anywhere from $14.95-$16.95 including free shipping.  I decided to list my socks for $14.95 including free shipping for 30 days.  They sold for $14.95 in 9 days and had 20 page views.

TIP:  I really like kid’s socks because they weigh and cost less than men’s socks and they have a retail value that is similar.  However they do take a little longer to sell.

TIP:  When choosing an item to purchase a good rule of thumb is to ask yourself can you sell the item for 3 times more than what you are buying it for, especially if your item is under $10.  If the item cost is over $10 I still want to mark it up at least 3 times, but if it is a quick seller you can get away with marking it up 2 times and you will still make money, just not as much.

Example:  You buy something for $5, you cannot sell it for $10, once you add up the shipping/selling fees and the cost of your item there is no profit left, so in this case you have to mark up your item at least 3 times, buy it for $5 and sell it for $15.  If you buy something for $5 and sell it for $15 after your item and all fees are paid you should make around $5, 100% return on your money.

You can make some money by doubling the price of your item, but I only think it is worth it if you know it is going to sell quickly.

Example:  If you paid $10 and sold it for $20, by the time you pay all fees you should be left with around $5, a $5 profit can add up throughout the week if you are selling a lot, but you have more money invested to make that $5, you are only getting a 50% return on your money.

If I invest $10 in a product I would like to see a 100% return, I want to make $10.  That is why the goal is to always mark up your item 3 times.  If you buy it for $10 you should sell it for $30 or try to.

The total cost of my item including all fees was $9.92; I sold my item for $14.95 so I made $5.03, that is an orange Julius at the mall and 2 egg toys out of the toy machines in front of the play area.

BUFFALO SOCKS-PROFIT $4.65

I bought these socks in the clearance section at Marshalls, an off priced retailer, for $3.18 including tax.  This item was interesting, I decided to start with the broken down price, I wanted to see if offering the lowest price from the start is the way to go.  My list price was $8.99 plus $3.99 shipping for 30 days.  I let them go for the entire 30 days and they did not sell, they had a lot of page views and a couple of watchers, but nothing.  I relisted them for another 30 days at $12.99 including free shipping; they were on for 1 day, had 4 page views and sold.  Maybe it does not matter what price structure you use, however this is just one example, perhaps I just found the right buyer at the right time.

TIP:  I learned along the way that by including just a little of your home’s surroundings in your pictures can help sell your item.  Make sure the part of your home in the picture is clean and neat, this gives the buyer a feeling that the item they are purchasing is coming from a nice environment.  You would not want to buy something from a dirty messy house and neither does your customer, but your customer does not know your house is well kept unless you give them a glimpse.  If you do not choose to include a little of your home in your pictures make sure the surface you use is neutral, you don’t want to take away from your item.  I have seen people use their granite counter top as their back drop which looks nice, just make sure it is not too busy looking.

HALLOWEEN COSTUME-PROFIT $9.40

My son wore this costume last year and it is now too small for him.  New toddler robin costumes on ebay were selling for $18.99 including free shipping.  My son’s costume had a small imperfection, which I highlighted, so I listed it for $15 including free shipping for 30 days.  The costume had 3 views and 1 watcher within an hour and sold later that afternoon for $15.  I was shocked, I know people pre plan in advance for Halloween, but I was not expecting that much interest in August.

TIP:  If you have any old Halloween costumes sitting in your closet that don’t fit your children anymore, they might sell on ebay quickly.  I was always told if an item sells too quickly it was priced too low, however in this case it was pre-owned and you could buy a new one for $4 more, I think it was priced perfectly.  I felt like I found the right buyer at the right time and he/she purchased the costume.

The fees I paid to sell my item are listed below:

$3.65 USPS shipping fee, I did not weigh my package

$1.50 ebay fee (10% of the total sale)

$.45 Paypal fee (3% of the total sale)

I had a previously used Fed Ex box that I used to ship the costume so there was no box cost.

TIP:  Save every box that comes your way, this will save you a lot of money in shipping supplies.  You still will want to buy specialized boxes, but you never know when a previously used box will fit your item perfectly.  In this case the old Fed Ex box was a perfect fit.

TIP:  You cannot reuse any kind of priority box from the post office. Someone sent me a package in a USPS priority box, I ended up keeping the box.  Eventually I sold something that fit that box, so I packed up my item in the priority box, however my shipping method was USPS first class.  When I went to drop off the box the post office guy said I could not send the package first class in a priority box.  I told him, “but the box was already paid for when it was shipped the first time,” it even had original post office markings on it from the first time it shipped.  The post office guy said it did not matter, crazy.  Anyway don’t wrap up your item in a used priority box, supposedly you cannot recycle them.

Total cost to sell my item was $5.60, so I made $9.40.  That is one admission to Monkey Joes, a jump jump place, and of course I always find a buy one get one free so both kids receive admission for the price of one, awesome.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN ITEM I LISTED THAT DID NOT SELL

After some research Nike performance socks appeared to be a really good selling item on ebay, so I bought 6 pairs for $10.59 including tax.  I started my listing at $19.99 including free shipping, very competitive with everyone else on ebay.    Even though my margin was a little short to begin with, I felt if I could sell them quickly then it would be worth it.

The problem I experienced was there are thousands of people selling black Nike performance socks on ebay, there was nothing special about them so everyone had them.

TIP:  We talked about checking how many items similar to yours sell per day, but also check how many people are selling your same item.  For example 10 items may sell per day on ebay which sounds good however if there are 100,000 people selling that item, no bueno, I would find something else, chances are you are going to get washed away in the flood and no one is going to find your listing, unless you pay for the exposure, which is expensive, and you will end up with no money left to be made.

I had this item listed for about 3 weeks and I had 7 page views.  There were too many people selling them so I ended the listing.

TIP:  I have experienced a lot of success with men’s Nike Dri Fit socks size 8-12.  They are a little harder to find, but come in more colors and designs so you are able to stand out in the crowd a little better.  3 pairs typically sell for $16.99 including free shipping, and you can find them at off priced retailers between $7-$8.50 including tax.  You end up making $3-$4 per item after all fees are paid, but they sell quickly.  I have had success selling woman’s Nike Dri Fit socks too, but they take longer to sell.  Men’s Nike Dri Fit socks sell within a week vs Women’s Nike Dri Fit socks which sell within a month.
